What is the thing you like most about teaching?
I really love the excitement on a student's face when they understand, or are able to play something that was previously beyond their skill. It is one of the most rewarding things as a teacher.
How do you inspire students to practice more?
Students tend to want to practice more if they know/like what they are learning. Rather than give students pages of exercises, I like to ask a student what type of music or band they're into, then use examples to show them concepts and how to think about different techniques.
What instrument do you play and how long have you taken lessons?
I play clarinet, and I have been taking lessons for a year now.
Who are your favorite musical artists?
My favorite musical artists are Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga.
What are your other hobbies besides music, and what is something interesting that you’ve recently learned outside of music?
My other hobbies include reading, watching TV, and hanging out with friends. I've learned about Crohn’s Disease.

What part do you feel that the recital experience plays in a student’s development?
One of the biggest hurdles in playing music is playing in front of people. Recitals help students get over that hump, and gives them experience playing on stage; which not only helps with confidence in their instrument, but also confidence in themselves.
What is your favorite type of music and who are your favorite musical artists?
My favorite type of music is jazz and jazz fusion. Artists like Snarky Puppy, Ripplegroove, and Soul Live are pretty much on repeat at my house.
Tell us about what you are working on now.
Right now I am working on writing and self producing my own solo album. It's been a labor of love for the past 2 years or so, but I'm looking to use it as a test run for future endeavors.
Do you have any hobbies?
Besides the obvious playing music, in my free time I enjoy hanging out with friends, writing, and playing video games.
If you could give a quick tip for playing string instruments, what would it be?
String instruments can have very different sounds depending on finger placement on the strings. Spend some time working on perfecting your sound by making sure every note you play has good finger placement so that your individual tone can shine through better.
What are your favorite foods?
My favorite foods are Mexican food, pizza, and steak.
What is the coolest thing you’ve learned in lessons recently?
I’ve learned three major scales!
Do you have performances individually or as a group coming up?
Yes, I play with the Barbe High School Band!
If you could give a quick tip for students taking lessons, what would it be?
Practice, practice, practice!
